History Ten years ago we developed our first Duthie Learning course, What to Expect Touring America's Great Loop. It was introduced as a $29.95 CD-ROM and sold through marine book stores, marinas, and this website. It ran on Windows and Apple computers. Five years ago Apple introduced a new operating ...Read More...

h A DJI Phantom 2 Vision Quadcopter owned by Terry Stafford was used to get beautiful bird’s eye views of Kentucky Dam Marina on the north end of Kentucky Lake. My Sony pocket camera took the video of the quadcopter and recorded the audio. You will see a marina in views probably never seen ...Read More...

Actual Photos of Masked Burglar While I haven't caught any burglars yet, my good friend, Russ, after reading my previous blog bought the D-Link DCS 932L like mine. The first night he tried it on his patio behind the house on Barkley Lake he was able to identify the intruder in the photos here that ...Read More...

Actual D-Link 932L Photo of Intruder This is a story that has taken 4 years to write.  It started with a 2008 Popular Mechanics story on a cleverly designed system that used tiny battery operated cameras that communicated wirelessly with a hub unit connected to my Internet router.  I thought this ...Read More...

I always enjoy the electronics aisle at Costco. Monday an iHome App-enhanced dual alarm stereo for $60 caught my eye and I brought one home. It lets you charge your iPhone at night and wakes you up in the morning. Setting it seemed a little complicated, but without reading the manual I thought I had ...Read More...

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2011 annual report for this blog. Here's an excerpt: The concert hall at the Syndey Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 29,000 times in 2011. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 11 sold-out performances ...Read More...

Last December I purchased an iPad so I could experiment with the latest techno toy.  I should have waited for the iPad 2 as it apparently fixes many of the problems below with the iPad 1. During the year I have used the iPad to show photos to one or two people. It  works great for this even in restaurants ...Read More...

Sort of: everything was going along really well until we discovered that AT&T disconnected the DSL access to the Internet. They won't allow DSL unless you also use their phone service. Thus, no way to get to the VoIP server in the Cloud. No problem I said, "I'll get a Verizon 4G LTE ...Read More...

I got the new Nikon S8100 camera just before leaving for our Florida trip in January. It is a pocket camera but has 10x optical zoom, and can film High Definition (HD) movies at 1080P resolution with 30 frames per second.  It also takes photos practically in the dark. I have only used the flash ...Read More...

Many people have asked me the best way to keep in touch while on a cruise. While the post card works well, today electronic means are better. You can download  a 5MB PDF copy of the presentation I gave at the Ft Lauderdale PassageMaker TrawlerFest in January 2011 by clicking Keeping In Touch. ...Read More...
