We have owned the Katy Leigh, our 36 ft Grand Banks Classic Trawler, for 17 years. We bought the boat in 1999 in Erie, PA and brought it to Kenlake Marina in May & June of that year. That was quite an adventure since we were so early in the boating season in the North. One of these days I will write ...Read More...

This morning I discovered a new example of technology run amuck. It was at at Rutters gas station in Pennsylvania. I wanted a simple sausage biscuit and coffee. At McDonald's you walk up to the cash register, say what you want, including one cream in the coffee, pay, and in 2-3 minutes you walk out ...Read More...

Ferry to Tobermory
The ferry left and arrive exactly on time. We had lunch on the boat and enjoyed the ride. Both the bow and stern open so we went on through the stern and off through the bow. Larger ferries have a turn around inside so you go on and off through the bow.

Returning to our shed in Murray one weekend we found a great puddle on the floor that looked like gray water. This meant a trip to Cullum & Maxey to get the problem fixed. Fortunately it was not a leak in the gray water tank but rather a split pipe in the gravity feed. As the water pump had been left ...Read More...

We spent 5 days at the Grand National Rally (GNR). The first day we took a bus tour to the Reiman Gardens at Iowa State University in Ames, IA and Boone, IA for the Scenic Valley train ride. It rained at the gardens which made for a hurried tour of the outside gardens. Inside they had a butterfly ...Read More...

What have we been doing?
In mid-May my older sister Louise passed away in Dundas, Ontario after a 1.5 month hospital stay at the relatively young age of 77. Consequently she had not taken time to get her home organized for a few years years. We had planned to come up to see her this week and attend ...Read More...

Ferry to Middle Bass Island
We left the trailer park at 8:00AM, parked the Trend in a large free lot about ¼ mile from the ferry terminal, and took the 8:30 ferry to Middle Bass Island. The only sun today was a small spot on the water on the way over. Rather than rent a golf cart we rode a bus for ...Read More...

The top photo is the magnificent entrance road to Olive Branch Campground where we spent last night. Even though the campground is just a few hundred yards from I-71 there is no truck noise due the thick woods along the entrance road. Olive Branch was a top of the line Resort Park.
Now look at the ...Read More...

We took I-71, 70 & 76 across Ohio and Pennsylvania with an overnight at Spring Valley Campground at Cambridge Ohio.
This is an excellent campground. Our destination was Conshohocken, PA. In case you have never heard of this town, it is a mainline suburb of Philadelphia.
We spent two nights ...Read More...

It was time for another trip on the View, this time to Baltimore for TrawlerFest. I will be giving my Cruising America's Great Loop talk on Saturday, Sept 29th. But first we had signed up for a Grand Lakes Yacht Club 35 mile cruise on the Katy Leigh south to Leatherwood Marina and Resort. It meant ...Read More...

I had decided to get a nice gift for Roger at the marina who made the platform for the new radar dome on the Katy Leigh. We stopped at a liquor store in Richmond, IN for fine bottle of Kentucky bourbon and was told the best stuff was in another liquor store back a mile. We turned around and drove back ...Read More...

Tuesday we spent the entire day in Pennsylvania heading west on I-81 and I-76 to the Pittsburgh KOA. It was being renovated and was very muddy. However, it still had the typical high price for a KOA. Wednesday we stopped to see the Columbus Park of Roses. All kinds of trees helped set off ...Read More...

Friday and Saturday were nonstop partying with my classmates from Engineering '62. Quite a few married Queen's girls so Mavis had a great time as well. We parked in the Holiday Inn parking lot beside Lake Ontario and went overnight to a very good campsite at nearby Rideau Acres. Friday night was ...Read More...

Clayton was one of our favorite towns along the Great Loop and here we are again minus the Katy Leigh. We are still early in the season so it is not crowded. We parked at the Antique Boat Museum and walked downtown to Bella's Bistro for a late lunch on the deck overlooking the St. Lawrence River. It ...Read More...

The Rally was a lot of fun and there were 50 motor homes like ours. Navarre is near the center of Amish Ohio. We saw two horse drawn buggies on the way to the campground. The campground was Baylor Beach Park. The beach was a tiny pond. However, the sites and facilities were first class. The whole ...Read More...

This short 2 week trip is to attend my college class 50th reunion at Queen's University in Kingston. We picked up the View in Murray and spent Friday and Saturday nights on the Katy Leigh. The big event was to film a Great Blue Heron swallowing a large fish. When the camera turned on the heron had speared ...Read More...

The other reason to visit Toronto this late in the year was the 75th anniversary of my high school not my 75th anniversary. We drove the View to the school parking lot early at 9:00AM and got a space to park with no problem. I had breakfast at a coffee shop on Yonge St. and walked around our old neighbor ...Read More...

The iPad presentation worked almost perfectly using the iPod as the control. Trying to use the iPod and a laser pointer at the same time did not work as I needed a third hand. I had to resort to pointing with one hand at the screen. There was one point after maybe 100 slides where the next slide refused ...Read More...

We are on our way back to Nashville now spending the night at a KOA near Huntington, WV. It was a 400 mile drive on I-79 through the West Virginia mountains with the trees turning to gold and red. It is a beautiful drive with only a few trucks.
On the trip east we spent a night in Harpers Ferry, ...Read More...
